Obituary for George Nelson Newman
George Nelson Newman, 81, of the Mt. Pisgah community, Bethune, S.C., passed away, Sunday morning, March 6, 2022, at his home. Born in Kershaw, S.C., he was a son of the late William Charlie Newman, Sr. and Nannie McCaskill Newman. He was employed with the DuPont Company for 33 years as an electrician. He was a faithful member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, Jefferson, S.C. for 52 years. Mr. Newman enjoyed fishing, traveling to the beach and in his earlier years, hunting. He was a proud and patriotic Vietnam veteran serving in the United States Army.

He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Linda Phillips Newman; 4 daughters, Sandy B. Hunter (Todd), Paula Sanders (Billy), Cathy Beckham (Rosemary) and Melissa N. Curtis (Anthony); 7 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; 2 sisters, Elaine Hartis, Helen Catoe (Glen Reed) and a brother, James D. “J.D.” Newman.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by siblings, Alma Hilton, Boyd Newman, Cecil Gerald “Buster” Newman, Grady Newman, Heyward Newman, Roy Dale Newman, Sara Lee Anderson, Susie Mae McGee and William C. “Bill” Newman.

Funeral services for Mr. Newman will be conducted, Wednesday afternoon, March 9, 2022, at 3:00 p.m. in the sanctuary of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, Jefferson, S.C. The Reverends Terry Corder and Joe Stines will officiate. Burial will follow with military honors in the church cemetery.

The family will greet friends following the committal service in the church Family Life Center.
