Walter Howard Baker, Jr. died peacefully at home on October 31. He was born on July 9, 1931 to Odessa and Walter Baker, the youngest of 7 children. His life was marked by a devout love for his family, a strong faith, and an unwavering commitment to his community. Walter grew up in the Buffalo community just outside of Kershaw, SC. There he met the love of his life, Maxine Lowery. They were married in 1960. Throughout his life he was known as a man of integrity and fairness who was deeply committed to his church. He worked with his family on the farm as a young man and later worked at Dupont. For several years he and one of his brothers ran a gas/service station. After they closed the station, they did contract residential and commercial painting together. Regardless of the work he was doing, Walter created friendships and nurtured relationships with his customers and clients.
He is survived by his wife Maxine Lowery Baker; two daughters April Baker (Deborah Lynn) of Nashville, TN, and Amy Deas (Lamar) of Liberty Hill, SC; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and his devoted caregiver Tesia Brooks of Lancaster, SC.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00pm Sunday, November 2, at the Buffalo Baptist Church in Kershaw. The family will receive visitors after the service in the Fellowship Hall/Ministry Center.
