Ronnie Douglas "Doug" Coates

With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Ronnie Douglas “Doug” Coates, 84, of Kershaw, South Carolina. Doug entered into rest on Monday evening, February 16, 2026, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.

Born on September 17, 1941, in Kershaw, Doug was the son of the late William Tommy Coates and Mabel Baker Coates. A lifelong resident of the community he loved, Doug was known as a hardworking man, a man of his word, and someone who never hesitated to lend a helping hand.

Doug proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps—an accomplishment he carried with great pride throughout his life. Following his service, he retired from Bowater and later owned and operated Coates Billiards and Coates Land Clearing. He had a strong work ethic and found joy in staying busy, whether tending his cows and horses or working the land.

More than anything, Doug’s greatest joy came from helping others and spending time with his family. His grandchildren held a special place in his heart, and his annual Fourth of July “Pond Party” became a treasured tradition filled with laughter, fellowship, and lasting memories. Over the years, he quietly provided countless benefits and support to those in need, always giving generously without seeking recognition.

In addition to his parents, Doug was preceded in death by his siblings, Paige Coates, Jerome Coates, Hazel Coates, Tommy Coates, Jr., Larry Coates, Val Coates, Shirley Hunter, and Betty Jo Holcomb; a special son, Michael Hayes; and a special granddaughter.

Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Kelly Coates Boone (Billy); his grandchildren, Haley Harrison (Dylan), Chase Truesdale (Brittany), Lane Truesdale (Crystal), Cody Boone (Savannah), and Kayla Vaughn, along with nine other special grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. He is also survived by special children, Patti Smith (Paul), Rusty Hayes (Cheryl), and Tina Ross (B.C.); and three sisters, Annette Faile (Quincy), Geraldine Truesdale, and Joan Johnson.

A service to honor and celebrate a life well lived will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 19, 2026, in the sanctuary of First Baptist Church, 210 North Matson Street, Kershaw, South Carolina. Rev. Todd Gandy will officiate.

A time of fellowship and visitation with the family will follow immediately after the service at Coates Billiards (Coates Pool Room), 504 Shop Road, Kershaw.

Those wishing to honor Doug’s memory may make memorial contributions to the Lancaster County Coroner’s Office Mounted Response Unit, P.O. Box 1809, Lancaster, South Carolina 29721. This dedicated team of volunteers, horses, and riders serves the community through search and rescue efforts and outreach.

Arrangements are entrusted to Baker Funeral Home.

Doug’s legacy of hard work, generosity, and unwavering love for his family will continue to live on in all who were blessed to know him.
