During her career, she served as President of the National Association of Banking, Women’s Division and President of the South Carolina Banker's Association, Women’s Division. Margaret served her church, Timrod Baptist Church for many years as church clerk, treasurer and Sunday School teacher.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Levy “Bud” Gainey, and her siblings, William Alva Horton, Dr. Carroll Horton, Dorothy H. Benton and Dr. Ira B. Horton. She is survived by her children, James (Sue) Gainey, Dale (Pam) Gainey, and Denise (Robbie) Rollings; her seven beloved grandchildren, Daniel (Kayla) Gainey, Lindsey (Tom) Gainey, Hope (Patrick) Tyner, Casey Gainey, Travis (Laine) Gainey, Anna (Chris) Rollings, and Colt Gainey; seven great grandchildren, and a wide circle of extended family and lifelong friends who will miss her dearly.
