Joey Dan Hilliard, 59, of Heath Springs, S.C., was welcomed into the arms of his Heavenly Father, Tuesday, May 24, 2022. Joey was born September 21, 1962, to Bobby Joe Hilliard and the late Brenda Couch Hilliard. He was a graduate of Andrew Jackson High School and graduated from Clemson University with a degree in forestry. He has lived all his life in the Stoneboro community of Heath Springs, S.C.
Joey loved the outdoors. He along with his dad and brother, hunted anything that walked, crawled or swam. His mom, Brenda, often prepared a gourmet meal that included a mixture of local wild game and Old English fine dining etiquette, to Joey’s delight.
As soon as the boys, Hunter, Tucker, and Abe were big enough to hold a gun, they were along for the hunt. Many nights were spent out in the woods with coon dogs baying. Joey and his beloved dog, Liz worked scouting timber for logging companies. He did what he loved best, walking the lands of Lancaster and Kershaw counties.
In his day, Joey and family farmed corn, soybeans, and wheat on every patch of land between Heath Springs and Lake Wateree. Joey “The Boss” was the head operator, head manager and lead mechanic. He tamed many rattle snakes in the Stoneboro area during his life. In his latter days, he mellowed quite a bit, becoming an old snake’s best friend in many various aspects of a colorful life.
Joey leaves behind his faithful son, Hunter (Mallory Watson) Hilliard, his dad, Bobby Jo Hilliard; his brother, Jeff (Sandy) Hilliard; 2 nephews, Tucker and Abe and his niece, Brenna all of Heath Springs, S.C.; his aunt, Annette Couch Pickett of Maryville, TN; cousins, Pamela Heath of Spartanburg, S.C., Mark Gray of Simpsonville, S.C and Sally Pickett of Virginia; special family friend, Linda Cauthen of Camden, S.C. In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Grace and Floyd Couch, his paternal grandparents, Louise and Dan Hilliard and aunt, Sylvia Couch Gray.
A service to remember and celebrate his life will be held at 3:00 o’clock p.m., Friday, May 27, 2022, in the sanctuary of Beaver Creek Baptist Church, Heath Springs, S.C. The Rev. Todd Gandy and Rev. Mac Thompson will officiate.
