Joel Douglas Coates, 78, of Kershaw, S.C., passed away, Saturday evening, December 25, 2021, at his home. Born in Kershaw County, S.C., he was a son of the late John Edward Coates and Nettie Belle Catoe Coates. He retired from the South Carolina Department of Transportation. Mr. Coates was a faithful member of Pineview Baptist Church and an avid Clemson Tiger football fan. He also enjoyed NASCAR. Most importantly, he cherished the time he spent with his family, especially his grandchildren.

He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Wanda Todd Coates; 3 daughters, Wendy Coates (Gregg) Morgan of Kershaw, S.C., Holly Coates (Bill) Everall of Lake Wateree, S.C.; Lori Coates (Kevin) McCowan of Kershaw, S.C.; 13 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren and 3 brothers, W.L. “Bill” Coates, Elmer “Cotton” Coats and Emerson (Pat) Coates all of Kershaw, S.C.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Harold Bruce Coates, Sr. and Oscar Eddie Coates, Sr. and 2 sisters, Mildred Simpson and Jonnie C. Gardner.

A celebration of life funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Wednesday afternoon, December 29, 2021, in Pineview Baptist Church, Kershaw, S.C. Rev. Hank Fanning will officiate. Burial will follow the service in the church cemetery.

The family will greet friends immediately following the burial in the church gymnasium.

Memorial contributions in memory of Mr. Coates may be made to Pineview Baptist Church, 224 Youngs Bend Road, Kershaw, S.C. 29067 or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
