Elmer Gilbert “Cotton” Coats, age 89, of Kershaw, South Carolina, passed away on Friday morning, March 20, 2026, at Atrium Health Main in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Born and raised in Kershaw, he was the son of the late John Edward Coates and Nettie Bell Catoe Coates. A graduate of Kershaw High School, Cotton dedicated 33 faithful years of service to Bowater, Inc., where he worked in the shipping department and built lasting friendships along the way.
Affectionately known as “Cotton” by all who knew and loved him, he was a familiar and cherished presence around town. He could often be seen riding his bicycle through Kershaw, always ready with a wave or a kind word. Later, he found great enjoyment in gathering with friends over good Southern cooking, especially at Cromer’s Restaurant. Cotton took great pride in his community and was deeply patriotic, having honorably served his country in the United States Army before his discharge in 1961.
Family meant everything to Cotton. He treasured the time spent with his grandchildren and found immense joy in his great-grandchildren, who brought light and laughter to his life. He also enjoyed the fellowship of his Tuesday night supper club, where stories were shared and friendships strengthened. A devoted fan, he rarely missed cheering on NASCAR and the Clemson Tigers.
Those left to cherish his memory include his loving daughter, Terri L. Coats; his grandchildren, Christopher Coats (Jordan) and Joshua Coats (Samantha); and his beloved great-grandchildren, Crew Coats, Briggs Coats, and Bennett Coats. He is also survived by his brother, Emerson Coates (Pat), and his special friend, Frankie Wolfe.
In addition to his parents, Cotton was preceded in death by son, Joseph L. “Joey” Coats and his siblings, Jonnie, Mildred, Oscar, Bill, Harold, and Joel.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of Sand Hill Baptist Church, 6895 Highway 341, Kershaw, South Carolina 29067.
A funeral service to celebrate and honor his life will follow at 2:00 p.m. in the church sanctuary, officiated by Rev. Michael Owens.
The burial will follow in the Kershaw City Cemetery, with military honors rendered by the Fort Jackson Army Honor Guard.
Memorial remembrances may be made to Sand Hill Baptist Church, 6895 Highway 341, Kershaw, South Carolina 29067
