Douglas Arnold Barfield, Sr., age 96, of Kershaw, S.C. passed away Monday evening, September 1, 2025, in Wayne T. Patrick Hospice House, Rock Hill, S.C. Mr. Barfield was a resident at Morningside of Lancaster, now known as Lancaster Grove Senior Living prior to his passing. He was born in Kershaw, S.C. on October 25, 1928. He was the only child of the late Dove Arnold Barfield and Connie Mackey Barfield.
Mr. Barfield married the late Lynne Lawson Barfield on June 22, 1952, in Ft. Knox, KY, that union shared 4 children; 1 son, Douglas A. “Doug” Barfield, Jr. and his wife Sandy of Kershaw, S.C.; 3 daughters, Judith B. Mobley and her husband Martin of Rock Hill, S.C., Reverend Dr. Virginia C. ”Ginger” Barfield of Columbia, S.C. and Holly B. Robinson and her husband Jack of Columbia, S.C.; 6 grandchildren, Meredith Westbrook of Rock Hill, S.C., Elizabeth Mobley of Greenville, S.C., Lawson Barfield of Kershaw, S.C., Stuart Barfield and his wife Morgan of Kershaw, S.C., Will Robinson and his wife, Katie of John’s Island, S.C. and Brice Robinson of Powdersville, S.C.; a great granddaughter, Abigail Westbrook; a niece, Laurin Kier of Chicago and a nephew, William Rogers of California.
Mr. Barfield graduated from Baron DeKalb High School and continued his education receiving his BS from Clemson College and later his Master’s in Education from the University of South Carolina. Mr. Barfield served his country in the United States Army serving in France and attained the rank of Captain.
During his professional teaching career, he mentored many students. He taught high school agriculture at Columbia High School from 1949-1951. He later taught high school agriculture at Kershaw High School and served as its principal. He finished his career by teaching agriculture and was Vocational Director for Andrew Jackson High School and served as Assistant Superintendent of Andrew Jackson Area Schools retiring in 1988.
He joined First Baptist Church in Kershaw in 1953 and served in many capacities. He served as Director of Sunday School and was a Deacon and served as chairman numerous times. He was a member of the Pastor Search committee and a member of the Building Committee. He served as a member of the following boards: S.C. Agriculture Commission, S.C. Farm Bureau Board, Lancaster County Farm Bureau Board serving as President several times, Lynches River Electric Cooperative Board, Lancaster County Council on Aging and Lancaster County Health and Wellness Commission.
Mr. Barfield was proud of serving as president of the S.C. Agriculture Teachers’ Association and served as former treasurer of the S.C. Vocational Teachers’ Association.
A celebration of life worship service will be conducted Friday, September 5, 2025, at 12:00 noon from the sanctuary of Kershaw Second Baptist Church, Kershaw, S.C. The Reverends Dr. T. Jason Moss and Bryant D. Fersner will officiate.
Mr. Barfield will be laid to rest privately prior to the service in Kershaw City Cemetery, next to his wife, who predeceased him in 2016.
The family will greet friends immediately following the worship service in the Kershaw Second Baptist Family Life Center.
