Connie George Payne, age 91, of Pinedale Residential Center, Camden, S.C. and formerly of the Mt. Pisgah Community, Bethune, S.C. passed away, Sunday, July 6, 2025. He was born in Kershaw, S.C., to the late Ben Payne and Minnie Catoe Payne on Nov. 5, 1933. He retired from Springs Industries. Mr. Payne enjoyed cutting grass, playing bingo and playing putt-putt. He also cherished the time he spent with his family traveling to the beach and the mountains. He was a faithful member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, Jefferson, S.C., where he was a former deacon and served on the finance committee. Mr. Payne served his country honorably in the United States Air Force.
He is survived by his daughter, Rhonda P. (Gary) Joyner of Kershaw, S.C.; his son-in-law, Dennis Thomas of Bethune, S.C.; 5 grandchildren, Candace (Doug) Eubanks, Jamie Thomas, Anna (Luke) Croxton, Stephen Joyner and Allen (Tiffany) Thomas; 6 great grandchildren, Hailey, Clark, Skylar, Makenna, Audra and Noah and 3 great-great grandchildren, Zach, Zayden and Zeland.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Edith Bradley “Joyce” Payne, his daughter, Deborah P. “Debbie” Thomas; his granddaughter, Heather Horton and siblings, H.B. Payne, Ollie Mae Payne Bartell, Alma Payne Scott, William Payne, Wilma Payne Lucas, Junior Payne, Jessie Payne, Arleva Payne Wallace, Mendel Payne and Johnnie Payne.
A funeral celebration of life service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, in the sanctuary of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, Jefferson, S.C. The burial will follow the service with military honors in the church cemetery. Rev. Terry Corder, Mr. Floyd Helms, Mrs. Anna Croxton and Mr. Jamie Thomas will officiate the service. Rev. Bobby Joyner will officiate the graveside service.
The family will greet friends immediately following the committal service in the church Fellowship Hall.
