On Wednesday, October 8, 2025, Alvin Leon McNaughton passed away peacefully at the Veterans Village in Florence, South Carolina.
Born in Lancaster, SC, on October 27, 1936, Alvin was the son of the late Boyd and Oleta Gillis McNaughton. He was married for 61 years to the love of his life, the late Carol Ann Peters McNaughton. Together, they built a beautiful life and were blessed with five children—Barry Dean, Terry Lynn, and Donna Marie: from a previous marriage Sandra Kay and Alvin Ray McNaughton of Topeka, Kansas.
A proud veteran of the United States Air Force, Strategic Air Command, Alvin served as a jet engine mechanic. Known for his tireless work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit, he was always eager to take on a new project or business venture. With Carol by his side, he built a lifetime of enterprise and adventure—owning Lancaster’s first pizza shop, managing apartment complexes, operating a monument business, and buying and selling anything that caught his interest. As a lifelong learner, Alvin also earned his auctioneer’s license, broker’s license, pilot’s license, and numerous other certifications.
Alvin and Carol shared a deep love of travel, exploring all the continental United States, the eight Canadian provinces, the Yukon, and Alaska in their motor home.
Alvin will be remembered for his intelligence, charm, and sharp wit. He was always impeccably dressed, quick with a joke, and never shy about sharing his honest opinion. Above all, Alvin will be remembered for his deep devotion to his wife, his family, and the many lives he touched along the way.
He is survived by his daughter Donna McNaughton Neal (Darrell) of Columbia, SC; Sandra Kay McNaughton Clear (Randy) of Topeka, KS; Alvin Ray McNaughton (Alisha) of Topeka, KS; his sister Bertha Renée Sweatman; twelve grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Alvin was preceded in death by his beloved wife Carol Ann Peters McNaughton; his son Barry Dean McNaughton; his daughter Terry Lynn McManus; his brother Hubert McNaughton; sister-in-law Virginia McNaughton; brothers-in-law Quincy Sweatman and Louis Peters; his triplet granddaughters; and grandson Jason Michael McNaughton.
A service honoring Alvin’s life will be held on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Fort Jackson National Cemetery, 4170 Percival Road, Columbia, SC 29229. Following the service, the family will welcome guests at the home of his daughter, Donna Neal.
