Obituary for Rev. Koger Hunter
A service of worship honoring the life of Rev. Koger Hunter, 91, of Kershaw, SC, and most recently since October 6, 2014, a resident of Martha Franks Baptist Retirement Community, Laurens, SC, will be held at 1:00 o’clock p.m., Thursday, January 5, 2017, in Sand Hill Baptist Church sanctuary. Rev. Michael Owens will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Born in Kershaw, SC, he was a son of the late J.C. (Doc) and Docia Outen Hunter. Rev. Hunter died Sunday, January 1, 2017, at Martha Franks Baptist Retirement Community, Laurens, SC. Rev. Hunter was a graduate of Kershaw High School, Kershaw, SC, attended Wingate College, Wingate, NC, Greenville Technical College, Greenville, SC, and graduated from Anderson College, now University, Anderson, SC. He was a World War II Navy veteran serving in the South Pacific. He also served as Chaplain of the American Legion, Kershaw Chapter. Rev. Hunter served the following churches as their minister; Oakdale Baptist Church, Rock Hill, SC, Gloverville First Baptist Church, Gloverville, SC, Waycross Baptist Church, Pelzer, SC, Union Hill Baptist Church, Pageland, SC, and Sylvia Circle Baptist Church, Rock Hill, SC. He also served as interim Pastor at the following churches; Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Great Falls, SC, Pleasant Dale Baptist Church, Lancaster, SC, and Second Baptist Church, Kershaw, SC. Rev. Hunter served as a substitute school teacher in Greenville, Kershaw and Lancaster counties. He loved working with small children, youth and all children. He loved his bee keeping hobby and seeing the bees produce honey. He was married to the late Etta Taylor Hunter for 66 years and 10 months who predeceased him on October 17, 2013, whom he called “Sweetie” the love of his life.

Surviving are his son, Bryan Hunter and his wife Kathy Hunter of Mauldin, SC; his daughter Kaye Hunter Hiott and her husband David of Lake Murray (Chapin), SC; 2 granddaughters, Lindsey Hunter of Lexington, SC and Sandi Hiott Haney and her husband Trammel of Leesville, SC; a grandson, Kevin Hunter of Mauldin, SC; 3 great grandsons, Cole, Marshall and Nathan Haney of Leesville, SC; a sister, Lucille H. Roberts of Kershaw, SC, and 2 nephews and 2 nieces. He was preceded in death by siblings, Condor Byran Hunter, Mamie Hunter Faulkenberry and Josie Hunter Small.

One of Rev. Hunter’s most treasured memories was going on the Honor Flight to Washington, DC with his grandson and locating his brother’s name on the wall.

The family will host a reception and receive friends immediately following the graveside service in the church Social Hall.

The family would like to thank the entire staff of the Martha Franks Retirement Community for the care of their father. The family would also like to thank Dr. DeBusk, Dr. Patterson and the entire staff of Laurens Family Practice, Laurens for their care of their father for 2 years and 2 months.

The family would like to thank Dr. Kumar and the entire staff of Advanced Cardiology of Laurens and Greenwood.

The family would like to thank Dr. Parramore and the entire staff of Greenwood Urology of Laurens and Greenwood.

The family would like to thank all the doctors, nurses and entire staff of Laurens County Memorial Hospital, Greenville Health System, Laurens.

The family would like to thank all the doctors, nurses and entire staff, especially the Oncology Department of Kershaw Health, Dr. Babcock, Dr. McElveen, Nurse Ann Fry, Nurse Joan and Ms. Sally for their care over the years.

The family would like to all the members of Sand Hill Baptist Church for delivering meals to Rev. Hunter after his wife’s passing, all the cards and visits during his hospital stays in KershawHealth, Providence Hospital and Martha Franks. He loved each of you dearly.

The family would like to thank all the doctors, nurses and entire staff of the S.C. Heart Center, Camden, SC, especially Dr. Zimmerman, Dr. Alderson and Nurse Vickie for their excellent care.

The family would like to thank Dr. Wilberding and the entire staff of Sentinel Kershaw for their care over the years.
