Obituary for Nannie Williams Plyler
Nannie Louise Williams Plyler, 92, of Kershaw, SC, beloved mother, grandmother and adored wife died on Sunday, July 24, 2016.Born in Kershaw on June 21, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Perry and Nina Gardner Williams.

She is survived by her husband of 67 years, William Elliott Plyler; three sons and four grandchildren. Her sons are Dr. William E. Plyler, Jr, (Frances) of Columbia, Dr. John Williams Plyler (Thomas) of Mount Pleasant and Gary Charles Plyler (Holly) of Summerville, SC. Her grandchildren are Layna A. Plyler, Annalee B. Mrs. Plyler grew up in Kershaw, graduated valedictorian from Kershaw High School, and married her childhood sweetheart Elliott, son of William Hazel and Melita Cook Plyler on August 12, 1949. After graduating from Columbia College, she taught school in Charleston, SC until Elliott completed his post WW II service and degree at The Citadel. The couple returned to Kershaw where Nannie enjoyed a long teaching career initially in elementary grades at Baron Dekalb and Heath Springs followed by a devoted love for the fourth grade at Flat Creek Elementary School for 39 years until she retired. She was always passionate about teaching and treasured each one of her students. She was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church of Kershaw. Nannie enjoyed community and church events and organizations, but her love was involvement and support of her family and her school children. Mrs. Plyler had the gift of hospitality and was known for her spectacular cooking. The familiar smell of each of her son’s favorite childhood dishes, most notably her famous chicken casserole, would welcome them home for family gatherings. She loved her vanilla ice cream and always had some in the freezer for her grandchildren’s visits. Her warm infectious smile and sense of humor put everyone at ease.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 26, 2016, at 11:00 a.m. at Baker Funeral Home Chapel in Kershaw with burial immediately following in the Kershaw City Cemetery. Reverend Bryant D. Fersner will officiate. The family will receive friends, one hour prior to the service, beginning at 10:00 AM. at Baker Funeral Home.
