Obituary for Joe William Conyers
A memorial service for Joe William Conyers, 90, will be held on Thursday, August 1, at 1:30 p.m. in Second Baptist Church. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends from 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. in the church fellowship hall.

Mr. Conyers died Monday, July 29 in MUSC-Lancaster. Born July 21, 1929 in Kershaw, he was a son of the late Harrison E. Conyers, Sr. and Lula Shute Conyers. He graduated from Kershaw High School in 1946. Mr. Conyers attended Clemson College in the late forties, and went on to graduate from the University of South Carolina with a Master in Economics in 1958. He was a US Army veteran having served during the Korean War. He married Burdette Barfield of Lugoff, S.C. in 1953.

Mr. Conyers worked for Springs Company, General Telephone Corp. in Durham, N.C., and Kendall Company in Camden and Bethune in numerous management capacities. He was also active in Boy Scouts of America in both Kershaw and Durham, N.C. Mr. Conyers was a member of Second Baptist Church where he served as Deacon and Sunday School Teacher for over 50 years. The Prison Fellowship program was his favorite mission. He was the owner of ConBar Farms in Lancaster and Kershaw Counties, raising hay, timber, and cattle for over 50 years. He was also a Mason and Shriner.

Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Burdette B. Conyers; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Harrison E. Conyers, Jr.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Children Research or to a charity of one’s choice.
