James Val Coates

James Val Coates, 58, of Kershaw, died Saturday, September 16, in PalmettoHealth Richland, Columbia.

Born in Lancaster, he was a son of the late William Tommy and Mabel Baker Coates. He was a heavy equipment operator.

Surviving are his daughter, Paige Coates of Kershaw; his son, Greg Coates and his wife Brittany of Cassatt; 2 grandchildren, Addison and Colin Coates; his siblings, Betty Jo Holcomb, Joan Johnson and Geraldine (Lonnie) Truesdale. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Yvonne Coates. Mr. Coates was preceded in death by 3 brothers, Hazel, Larry and Tommy Coates, Jr. and a sister, Shirley C. Hunter.
