Obituary for James "Jimmy" Phillips

James Tillman “Jimmie” “Frog” Phillips, age 83, of Kershaw, S.C., passed away, Thursday, July 27, 2023, at his home. Born in Kershaw, S.C, he was a son of the late Benjamin Franklin Phillips, Sr., and Sallie Joyner Phillips. “Jimmie” was a graduate of Flat Creek High School. He was very proud to tell everyone that he was a RATTLER. He loved his family, his church, and his community. He enjoyed attending sporting events, cheering on his grandchildren, and always supporting Andrew Jackson Athletics for many years. He loved to rabbit and fox hunt. He liked to hear his dogs put on a good run. He also enjoyed old cars and attending car shows and bluegrass music. “Jimmie” was very caring and compassionate, always making sure others were taken care of, especially his son Bryan. He had many special friends in his life. He never met a stranger, always willing to share a table, on his visits to Beth’s Restaurant and Brenda Kay’s Cafe.

He was a faithful member of Pleasant Plain Baptist Church and retired from Lancaster County Maintenance Shop/Fleet Operations.

He is survived by his daughter, Donna P. Holden and her husband, Donald; 2 sons, Jeffrey S. Phillips and his wife, Candice, and James Bryan Phillips; 4 grandchildren, Chelsea H. Gardner and her husband, Drew, Kaitlyn Holden, Mason Kirkley and his wife, Hannah, and Nicholas Kirkley and 2 great grandchildren, Karsyn Gardner and Holden Gardner and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his special friends, Pamela Harger and Carol Ann Faulkenberry.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Clara Holden Phillips; 2 sisters, Vera Catoe and Florence Whitaker and 6 brothers, Robert Payne, Frank Phillips, Bob Phillips, Paul Phillips, Arthur Phillips, and Everette Phillips.

The funeral service to celebrate his life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, July 31, 2023, in the sanctuary of Pleasant Plain Baptist Church. Rev. Todd Montgomery will officiate. The burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will greet friends immediately following the service in the cemetery and other times at home.
