Obituary for Irene B. Montgomery Kennington
Funeral services for Irene Blackwell Montgomery Kennington, 96, will be held at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, January 8, 2012 in New Haven Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Charlesboro Baptist Church Cemetery. The Revs. Todd Montgomery and Robert Jeske will officiate. Mrs. Kennington died Thursday, January 5, 2012 in Springs Memorial Hospital, Lancaster. Born in Lancaster County, she was the daughter of the late Chalmers B., Sr. and Lillian Newman Blackwell. Mrs. Kennington was the former owner/operator of Montgomery’s Store. She was a charter and the oldest member of New Haven Baptist Church. She enjoyed gardening, singing, camping and spending time with her family. She also enjoyed going to the beach and was an excellent cook. Mrs. Kennington was widowed twice, first by the late Lewis P. Montgomery and second by the late J.P. Kennington, Jr. Surviving are 4 children; son, Jimmie Montgomery and his wife Lillie Mae of Flat Creek, twin daughter, Jean Campbell and her husband Jackie of Jefferson, twin son, Jack Montgomery and his special friend, Kelly Calliham of the home, daughter, Frances Thompson and her husband Pete of Flat Creek, 9 grandchildren; Ricky Montgomery (Lou), Rev. Todd Montgomery (Sharon), Jenny Stavrakas, Tammy Martinez (Ray), Melissa Campbell, Jerry Montgomery (Amy), Tracie Field (Brian), Kelli Bowers (Todd) and Mandy Phillips (Dr. Chris Phillips), 17 great grandchildren, 8 great- great grandchildren, 2 brothers; Ervin “Blackie” Blackwell of Kershaw and C.B. Blackwell, Jr. of Lancaster. She was preceded in death 2 sons; Jerry and Maxie Montgomery and brothers; Ray, John, Melvin, Bill Blackwell and 2 infant brothers. The family will receive friends, Saturday, January 7, 2012 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Baker Funeral Home and other times at the home, 2315 Gold Mine Highway, Kershaw. Memorial contributions may be made to Home Care and Hospice of Lancaster, 901 West Meeting Street, Suite 201, Lancaster, S.C. 29720 Baker Funeral Home is serving the family of Mrs. Kennington.
