Obituary for Henry Lee Johnson
A service of worship celebrating the life of Henry Lee Johnson, 95 of Lancaster, will be held at 3:00 o’clock p.m. in the afternoon, Sunday, April 8, 2018, in the sanctuary of First Presbyterian Church. Rev. Edgar McCall will officiate.
Mr. Johnson graduated from high school and joined the Army Air Force in 1943. He flew 10 missions over Germany during the last months of World War II. He attended the University of South Carolina, graduating in 1949. He moved to Lancaster to work as an accountant. He later joined Nationwide Insurance in 1955. A lifelong Presbyterian, he was an active member of First Presbyterian Church, serving as a deacon and elder. Mr. Johnson was a Boy Scout leader for nearly 30 years, enjoying camping, traveling and the Jamborees. He was one of the best BBQ fundraisers for the Scouts. He passed on these skills, teaching his grandsons how to cook a pig.
He served as Mayor of Lancaster in the 1970’s. He was active in the Jaycees, Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis, and other civic organizations. He also maintained active interest in politics, both local and national, till nearly the end of his long and accomplished life. He loved being a grandfather, and recently welcomed his first great-grandchildren. After attending USC football games for 50 years, he was nominated by his grandson, Andrew Johnson to be named a Legendary Gamecock Fan, and was so honored on November 16, 2013.

The family will greet friends immediately following the memorial service in the church Fellowship Hall and other times at the home.
