Hazel Nelson Sowell

Hazel Nelson Sowell, 94, of Kershaw, passed away, Sunday, May 17, 2020, at White Oak Manor, Lancaster. Born in Kershaw, he was a son of the late Grover Cleveland Sowell and Lilly Coates Sowell. Mr. Sowell retired from the DuPont Co. and was a farmer. He was a member of Thorn Hill Baptist Church, Flat Rock Lodge # 178 and a United States Army veteran serving in World War II. He loved country music and enjoyed spending time with Mrs. Ruby Williams and friends listening to them play music every week. He also enjoyed eating his lunch every day at Cromer’s Restaurant and finishing his meal with a trip to K-Town Café or 521 Filling Station for ice cream. Most importantly, he loved his family and friends.

Surviving are three children, Barbara S. Lewis of Lancaster, Ronald N. Sowell and his fiancé Candice of Kershaw and Carolyn S. Truesdale and her husband Sam of Kershaw; six grandchildren, Robbie Mobley, Melissa (Jeff) Burkett, Melanie (Troy) Jordan, Daryl (Alison) Truesdale, Ron (Chasity) Sowell and Brad Sowell; sixteen great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 71 years, Viola Williams Sowell and five siblings, Viola Horton, Wilbur Sowell, Cleveland Sowell, Lillian Kelly and Boyce Sowell.

A viewing will be held, Tuesday, May 19, 2020, from 12:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. at Baker Funeral Home.

Graveside services will be conducted, Wednesday, May 20, at 3:00 p.m., in the Thorn Hill Baptist Church Cemetery, Heath Springs. The Revs. Steve Mackey and Keith Coates will officiate. Burial will follow in the cemetery. Military honors and Masonic rites will be rendered.

Memorial contributions in memory of Mr. Sowell may be made to Thorn Hill Baptist Church, 2587 Kershaw Country Club Road, Heath Springs, S.C. 29058.
