Obituary for Dorothy Horton Benton
A Funeral service for Dorothy Horton ”Dot” Benton, 93, of Bethune, SC, will be held at 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 20, 2015, in Shamrock Baptist Church, Bethune, SC. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The Reverends Odell Sullivan and Luke Morrison will officiate. Mrs. Benton, widow of George Cleveland Benton died Saturday, January 17, 2015, in KershawHealth, Camden, SC. Born in Bethune, SC, she was the daughter of the late Ira Boyd and Ethel Baker Horton. She was a member of Shamrock Baptist Church where she served in various capacities. She had been a former food service director for Bethune High School, a volunteer for Hospice, and worked with Kershaw County Council on Aging. Mrs. Benton was a member of Bethune Woman’s Club where she had served as a officer. She also enjoyed spending time with her family. Surviving are 2 sons, George Tony (Sue) Benton of Spring Hill, TN, James Donald “Jimmy Don” (Phyllis) of Bethune, SC; 2 daughters, Juda Benton of Bethune, SC, Susan (Paul) Bill of Charlotte, NC; 8 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; 1 great-great granddaughter; 2 brothers, Dr. Ira B. (Ann) Horton of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Dr. Carroll (Virginia) Horton of St. Matthews, SC; a sister, Margaret H. Gainey of Bethune, SC, and a special cousin, Lewis Lee Neal of Camden, SC; Also surviving are special family members, Jimmy and Mara Jones, Taylor Jones and Chuck Horton ; her caregiver, Inesther Sullivan and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Alex Byrd; a great granddaughter, Violet Benton; a brother, William Alva Horton; a brother-in-law, Bud Gainey and a sister-in-law, Blanche Horton. The family will receive friends Monday, January 19, from 6:00 -8:00 p.m. at Baker Funeral Home, Kershaw, SC and other times at the home, 402 S. Peachtree Street, Bethune, SC. Memorials may be made to Shamrock Baptist Church-Missions Fund, 3573 Porter Road, Bethune, SC 29009. Baker Funeral Home, Kershaw is serving the family of Mrs. Benton.
